An almost mythical island. We begin an atmospheric journey today.
It is the island of Amorgos with its infinite blue, Amorgos with its energy fields, its bright light, and its poetic beauty.
The island of Amorgos, birthplace of poetry and poet Nikos Gatsos.
Located at the southern end of the Cyclades but in the heart of the Aegean Archipelago. A day trip to one of the special islands of Greece.
7: oo am.
As the first day’s boat departs from Aegiali, heading west towards the Cyclades and Piraeus. We believe on the faces of the passengers the possible end of their vacation, and this sweet fatigue that leaves you with a beautiful journey when it comes to its end. However, our day tour in Amorgos has just begun.
8:40 am, Southeast Cyclades
Amorgos, it is said that it took its name from the plant “Amorgis” as a kind of flax with which Amorgos tunics were made. It is located at the northern end of the Cyclades, next to Naxos and the Key Cyclades. With two natural harbors, Katapola and Aegiali, and an incredibly beautiful “hora”, one of the most beautiful in the Cyclades, Amorgos seems to intersect the Aegean Sea and its vastness.
9:35 am, the Amorgian Shepherd
We started our day with traditional Amorgian cakes and a Greek coffee of course.
Amorgos is famous for some traditional and favorite products such as cakes, pink sugar, raki, raki …
Rose Sugar is a unique product made from wild rose petals that bloom in May that are flavored with sugar and lemon. The cake is made of mixture and seeds. It is the dessert offered on lemon balm, in case of baptism and celebrations, always accompanied by raki.
10:42 am, the “Captain Morgan” of the Cyclades
The French love Amorgos and Amorgos the French. In this long-lasting relationship of love and mutual respect, Bertrand’s story disappears. Bertrand from Amorgos made a long journey almost all over the world to return with his boat to Amorgos. Today he organizes cruises with traditional boats in the Aegean, which he considers the best place for such trips.
12:15 pm, a little closer to God.
Visit the monastery of Ag. Georgios of Valsamitis.
A point where antiquity, Orthodoxy, a famous water mill, the god Apollo, St. George, the water that predicts what will happen in the future, and the constant search for truth, exist just as well. In the 8th century, an icon was found at this point and so a monastery was built. Today it is a place of spiritual elevation, tranquility, serenity and inner search.
13:30 pm A long journey in the “cry“”
The capital of the island, “chora” of Amorgos presents the classic Cycladic beauty with narrow, cobbled streets, white two-story houses, arches, and countless churches. The image is completed by an immaculate white, crystal almost sky blue and the strong, warm colors of the bougainvillea.
All of these are known and loved in our Cycladic color palette.
Another feature is the typical hill with windmills, overlooking the Aegean Sea.
A great contradiction if we consider the years of pirate races. These tortured, narrow streets, this labyrinth of the “chora” then served to escape from the inhabitants, who ran and lost here to escape the pirates.
14:45, Meeting with history
A visit to the folk museum, which houses the island’s historical archives. This archive has been assembled for several decades and has been digitized in recent years. The archive has documents from 300 years ago.
The documents reflect the way of life of the island’s inhabitants and the changes that have taken place over the centuries. Important historical facts and figures on the oldest image of Amorgos are also in these pages of foliage. You can also find recorded phenomena, natural disasters that affect the landscape but also the economy – the society of the island.
15:45, St. Anne and the Virgin Mary of Hozoviotissa
Saint Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary and the Virgin Mary is symbolically found here on the east side of the island.
We are talking about the famous little chapel of Santa Anne and the famous beach, with fantastic aquamarine colors of the water that formed the natural background for Luc Mpesson’s film “Big Blue”. The Ag. Anna resembles here a continuous conversation with the monastery of the Virgin Mary of Hozoviotissa, which stands nine centuries apart.
Amorgos is famous for its hiking trails. The most famous route is the ascent to the Hozoviotissa monastery, 300 stairs and several stairs to enjoy this sensational view that is spectacular. Stay here, and admire the breadth of the world on one of the largest and most beautiful balconies.
16:20 pm, Facing the Aegean Sea, seeking God
Built in defiance of the landscape, and at the same time enlarging the grandeur of the world, perched on steep rocks, the Hozoviotissa monastery looks like a miracle.
It seems to balance on a thin rope that separates the material world from the spiritual hymn to the human will, and faith. Almost against natural law, a meteorite in the Aegean. Meteors like thousands of unanswered questions from humanity. The monastery was built in 1088 and the occasion for its inauguration was to find the icon of the Virgin Mary coming here from Hozhova in Palestine, a place near the Holy Land and Jericho.
An island, an immense blue embrace, and a miraculous place that affects the souls of the people
18:30 Winter and Castle
We return to the “chora” and it is already Vespers time.
Visit then the many churches in the “chora” and we are directed towards the Castle which dominates on the rock in the middle of the village.
It has been there since the 13th century. It is a Venetian building. At the top of the cliff it will take you to a steep staircase built on the north side, while to climb the Castle you will first pass the Ag chapel. George. From the Castle now the view is panoramic and reaches up to Naxos, the small Cyclades, and iOS. From this point, the inhabitants were able to control the sea of Naxos and Astypalaia.
21:45, “Amorgiano soft perasma »
Look at the cafeteria with traditional music played by young musicians. Amorgos is famous for revelations organized on every occasion …
