A Basic Approach On How To Pack Seafood In Foam Refrigerators
Here, we’ll talk about an effective way to pack seafood so that it stays fresh if you’re just out on a nice fishing trip or just bought a few pounds of fish, shrimp, crabs, clams or other delicious seafood from a market. . When you need a way to keep cool during a long trip or any other reason you can’t refrigerate right away, using a high quality foam cooler will get the job done right.
Now, let’s review a few supplies you need …
High quality foam cooler
You’ll want to make sure that the foam brush you use is at least 3/4 inch thick and “completely melted,” meaning it won’t be rushed through the manufacturing process. This ensures that the container has better resistance to leakage.
Puncture Resistant Plastic Bags
Next, get some plastic bags large enough to easily hold your load of seafood. The bags should be at least two millimeters thick for better puncture resistance.
Fresh Taken Or Purchased Seafood
Of course, you want to make sure that the seafood you catch or buy is ready to be packaged and that they have been protected from exposure to stay fresh.
Zip Ties Or Other Tie Supplies
Have several zip ties or other accessories to attach to your hand to secure each plastic bag so that there are no spills or leaks.
Refrigerant Gel Pack
Using gel packs will allow you to use less ice, helping to lower overall weight once everything has been packed in the cold. You will need enough gel packs to place on the sides and top of your packaged seafood pack.
A standard bag of ice should be enough to use in a small to medium sized foam cooler. The ice should not be exposed to heat which can cause it to start to melt before it is used in the cold. The ice that already melts when placed in the cold does more harm than good to your seafood.
First Step – Put the seafood in a protective plastic bag.
Second Step – Remove excess air from the arrangement and twist the top of the bag in preparation for attack.
Step Three – Bend the tied end and attach it to secure the package.
Step Four – Repeat the bagging, twisting, folding and tying process so that your seafood is double or even triple bagged if you wish.
Step Five – Add your ice to the foam itself. It should be enough ice to cover the bottom of the jar so that the seafood package rests, but not so much that you can’t close the lid securely once everything has been packed.
Step Six – Place your seafood package so that it rests on the ice.
Step Seven – Wrap the seafood with gel packs and place at least one gel pack on top.
The Eight Steps – Secure the spark plug cap so that the warmer air does not melt the ice prematurely.
With a properly packaged and properly secured foam pack, your fishing or seafood purchase must be kept fresh for a minimum of 24 hours.
